OrthodonticS

Orthodontic appliances are braces which are made of metal, ceramic, or plastic in the case of Invisalign. They may be removable (Invisalign) or they may be brackets bonded to the teeth (Braces). By placing a constant, gentle force in a carefully controlled direction, braces (or Invisalign) slowly move teeth to a corrected position. You can now choose from conventional braces, clear ceramic braces, or Invisalign. Wires are also less noticeable than they used to be, and the latest materials move teeth faster with less discomfort.

Duration of Treatment

Treatment time varies and can last between six months and three years. This time range depends on several factors including age, treatment method, and how severe your case is. A big factor in a successful and efficient treatment is you! The more involved and motivated you are, the more efficient your treatment will be. Before beginning your orthodontic care, Dr. Waite will discuss all of your options and provide an estimate for how long your full treatment may take. Please contact our practice to schedule an appointment and learn more about orthodontics and the treatments we provide.

DENTOFACIAL ORTHOPEDICS

We often think that orthodontics is just for getting our teeth straight, but it is actually much more than that.  Dentofacial orthopedics involves the guidance of facial growth and development, which occurs largely during childhood.  Appliances that are frequently used — the more familiar braces for orthodontics, and other specialized appliances like headgear and expanders, depending on what facial abnormalities are present. Sometimes orthopedic treatment may begin before conventional braces, but often the two are used at the same time.

So if your child gets braces and headgear, he’s actually undergoing orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics.  There are also other appliances that we use that aid in encouraging lower jaw growth to occur in a growing patient.  Essentially, we place a high importance on not only straightening you or your child’s teeth, but we also want to help them achieve an optimal bite, and facial esthetics.
